By ALMA J. BUELVA GREAT things come in small packages. This is true of Chihuahuas, the tiny dogs that pack great qualities even though they are much smaller than the average house cat. The Chihuahua's big personality – smart, courageous, playful and affectionate – has won the hearts of many Filipinos as proven by the high number of chihuahuas registered with the Philippine Canine Club Inc. In 2013, local Chihuahua enthusiasts took to Facebook to form the Philippine Chihuahua Club. A guy named Yen Whistler started the community page, which has grown to nearly 2,700 members today. PCC now has eight Facebook page administrators, among them are Kevin James Martinez and Daryl Andrew Supan. The latter actively participates in the group's many public engagements as well. In an interview with MetroPets, Supan said the prime purpose of the PCC is to educate the market about Chihuahuas particularly about proper breeding, health requirements and other important matters for those who sell puppies and offer stud service. “The objectives we set are meant to improve the Chihuahua breed by discouraging bad breeding and selling practices,” said Supan. “This is why as admins we immediately delete posts that don't conform to ideal standards.” Today, a Chihuahua puppy from a line of champion show dogs from a reputable breeder can fetch from P40,000 or more. On the other hand, a good pet quality Chihuahua pup can be had from P10,000 (male or female) or more, Supan said. Supan who owns 16 dogs, 9 of them Chihuahuas, said many prefer to have a Chihuahua for a pet dog because it is a very low maintenance dog. Everything about this breed is small: from their food and water intake down to the size of their poop. Chihuahuas are also very easy to bring around and don't require a big space to keep them happy and active indoors. Despite being petite, Chihuahuas don't shortchange in terms of companionship as they are loyal and sweet, just like their bigger kins. They can also be very funny. True to being an online community established to share knowledge about their beloved Chihuahua, the PCC has chosen not to be locked into any formal pet product endorsement contracts, said Supan. However, they do welcome the support of occasional sponsors who voluntarily donate to PCC's events and programs. At present, active PCC members try to hold monthly meet-ups, depending on where their next public events take them. Next year, the group plans to hold a charity grand eyeball for the benefit of lesser known dog shelter. After all, the little Chihuahuas' big personalities are complemented by their huge hearts.
