Pet lovers share their Christmas wishes for pets
THERE'S just one thing pets want for Christmas more than anything else, and that is to (always) have a proper, loving home. All pets deserve one and if animal lovers can have their way, it's exactly their wish for pets this season, especially for strays.
“I have a simple wish: for all pets to be healthy and have the basic necessities (food and shelter). And for those who are less fortunate, to at least be safe during the festivities,” said Charlene Dy from HappiDoggy Philippines which distributes quality dental chews for dogs.
Her wish is echoed by other animal lovers who want to see an end to pet abandonment and cruelty.
MetroPets asked personalities in the pet industry what Christmas wish they have on behalf of animals and here's what they said:
Meanwhile, MetroPets also reached out to a hero dog and its very own "model" cat to know what they want for Christmas. With the help of their "spokespersons" , here's what they said:
IT'S been said that dogs have owners and cats have staff. This is very true at cat cafes where it is the official job of some to take care of fussy cats.
At Velvet Friends Cat Cafe in Pasay City, a team of cat attendants and baristas make sure that the ambassador cats and the customers who adore them, get the right care and attention they deserve.
Juan Paolo Fopalan and Mark Evan Cervania work as cat attendant and senior barista, respectively. Although they work in the background while the cats and visitors mingle, their professional and personal touches help elevate the overall experience Velvet Friends Cat Cafe offers.
Twenty-two-year old Fopalan or “Pao” to his co-workers and guests, was a former aerial instructor (anti-gravity yoga) before he joined Velvet Friends. He finds being a cat attendant as a wonderful job considering that he is a cat lover himself and that many people seem interested to be in his shoes.
“I really love taking care and looking after 19 adorable cats. Most of the time, guests would ask me if we have a job opening for cat attendants and if they could apply. They would often tell me 'nakakainggit naman ung trabaho mo' (you have an enviable job) and, in that way, I feel that I am one lucky person to have this job,” Fopalan said.
When customers are not playing with Velvet Friends' cats, they are likely sipping coffee specially made by Cervania.
The young barista is an old hand when it comes to coffee concoctions. He used to work at a known chain of coffee shop and also worked overseas for a bar and a cafe in Macau.
At 26, Cervania believes he has found his passion in coffee.
“I learned how to be a barista from my first job at Seattle's Best Coffee in Baguio. That time, I kind of fell in love with making coffee and eventually, I excelled in this specialization and achieved some employee awards,” Cervania said.
At Velvet Friends, Cervania skillfully creates artful cups of coffee topped with different images of cats. Soon, the customers took notice and expected Cervania's “stamp” on their coffees.
Cervania said there are customers who specifically request that I make their coffees with a cat each,” which, in a way, is a form of compliment that they appreciate his work. To make one cup of coffee with a standard cat art on it, takes at least two to three minutes.
“In doing this coffee art, timing is actually very crucial because I have to maintain the temperature of the drink before it is served to the customer,” Cervania said. “But I love my job as I get to do here what I am passionate about, which is coffee. Also, it's very interesting to have the cats with us for us to play and have fun with,” he added.
Here's a short video of Cervania at work:
Fopalan and Cervania both dream of becoming businessmen themselves.
“I want to own my own cafe someday,” said Cervania. “I want to learn management and leadership skills to help me in my goal of running my own cafe. As a barista, I know I still have a lot to learn, so for now, I'll be taking this opportunity to hone my skills and see what more could be developed and improved.”
Fopalan didn't specify what kind of business he wishes to get into as he is obviously preoccupied right now with 19 cats.
“The cats all have different personalities, but I love them all even though some can be grumpy at times. I have no favorites, I treat them all like my own,” he said. ---- MetroPets
FOURTEEN CATS, at least 11 breeds. These are what visitors to Velvet Friends Cat Cafe can expect to see and meet when they enter the "cat haven". From the common to the exotic, the cats at Velvet Friends Cat Cafe will make every ailurophile swooning in delight. They are the new cats on the block along with one fine, looking Puspin named Manila whose black and white tuxedo marking makes him looking always dressed to the nines!
Here's a brief description of the cats you'll find at Velvet Friends Cat Cafe:
SIBERIAN. From Russia with love, the Siberian Forest Cat is an ancient breed. Yaroslav has a very handsome face and a beautiful color and coat (Flame Point). He loves to hide, but when he shows himself up, his presence is one to behold.
KURILIAN BOBTAIL. Those who like bobtail cats would fall for a Kurilian Bobtail no doubt. This old breed of cat popular in Russia and other parts of Europe has a bushy bobtail. Basil and Kyryllo are good examples of this breed that originated from the Kuril Islands, claimed by both Russia and Japan. They are a bit shy but they are smart and agile.
MAINE COON. The largest domesticated breed of cat and one of the oldest natural breeds in North America. Bryley is a “gentle giant” who is calm and composed and who takes pride of his size and the length of his tail!
EXOTIC SHORTHAIR. The shorthaired version of the Persian, the Exotic Shorthair is adorable at all angles and Minushi is a fine example of one. This big boy is easy to please and warms up pretty quickly even to a complete stranger.
BRITISH SHORTHAIR. If you want a chunky cat, a British Shorthair is a good choice. Giorgio and Curtis are examples of a “Blue” and “Bi-color” British Shorthair. They have dense coat and broad face. They also have attractive copper eyes.
RAGDOLL. Here's one beautiful cat that has every reason to be confident. Quintin and Carter live up to their breed's standard description of having blue eyes and distinct colorpoint coat that is semi-longhair, soft and silky. The ragdoll has a wonderful bushy tail and it shamelessly flaunts it!
CORNISH REX. For a breed of cat that only wears an undercoat, the Cornish Rex has the softest coat of any cat breed. They don't look much from afar, but when you get to touch its coat, you will see that it's curly and velvety! The Cornish Rex like Nijinsky is very affectionate, sociable and quite athletic. Niijinsky moves so elegantly like a ballerina and he likes the attention he gets all the time.
AMERICAN CURL. You'll love this cat breed from ears to paws! Liam is a good example of an American Curl who is quite laid-back. Perched high up the catwalk, Liam could hear everything being said about his wonderful ears which curl up naturally. This adorable feature is a result of spontaneous mutation.
PUSPIN. The Puspin or Pusang Pinoy is a domestic short-haired cat that does not belong to any particular recognized cat breed. Nevertheless, the domestic shorthair is all over the world. In the United Kingdom, they are called moggies. They are resilient, smart and lovable. Manila puts his kind on the map by thriving among purebred at Velvet Friends Cat Cafe.
HIGHLAND FOLD AND HIGHLAND STRAIGH. Radcliffe is a Highland Fold (Red Marble) cat with an intriguing character: a little standoffish but tolerant enough to let you pet him gently. He becomes affectionate in his own terms so the little effort to win his trust becomes worth it.
Blake, on the other hand, is a Highland Straight with a rust black coat. He looks kinda like a red panda and he is not friends with the camera, but he is a cool cat to hang around with when he is not hiding.
