HEAVY rain and traffic did not stop a group of cat lovers to attend Royal Canin Philippines' latest “kitten class” held at Velvet Friends Cat Cafe in Pasay City.
With a team of product experts and veterinarian, Royal Canin shared practical and vital information about cat care to the men and women who are self-professed ailurophiles. For two hours, facts and tips on how to raise healthy, happy cats and kittens were discussed, punctuated by questions from zealous cat parents who signed in for the P200/person class.
“Please share this information that it's not true that the younger the animal, the more rabies they have. It's simply not true. Rabies is a viral disease that spreads from the saliva of an infected animal,” Dizon said.
As the esteemed American author and journalist Ernest Hemingway once said: “One cat just leads to another.”
On that note, Royal Canin's kitten class progressed by going through the important stages of a cat's life from mating, birthing, breastfeeding and parenting (for their humans).
Female cats can start to go into heat as early as 4 months and that stage occurs every 21 days for 9 days on average. If they become pregnant, gestation period takes up to 66 days.
Dizon said kittens up to four weeks old rely only on their mother's milk which contains natural vitamins that helps strengthen their immune system. After that, they can be slowly introduced to solid (wet or dry) diet.
Dizon also talked in detail about diseases that young and old cats can catch or contract and parasites that pose serious threat to cats, especially kittens.
Fleas, lice, fungus, mites, and ear mites are external parasites that veterinarians commonly see in cats. Dizon said fungi could give kittens unattractive bald spots, while a very bad case of ear mites infestation could lead to seizures. Internal parasites such protozoa could give cats diarrhea, while heartworms could possibly lead to respiratory complications and vomiting.
Dizon said these health hazards can be prevented by keeping a clean environment for kittens and cats. In addition, the use of vet prescribed medicine from antiseptic and topical solutions will also ensure that diseases and parasites don't come back.
Due to popular demand, Velvet Friends Cat Cafe has immediately scheduled a second Kitten Class to accommodate more cat lovers.
