ROYAL Canin Philippines is spearheading an ambitious goal to set a new Guinness World Record for the largest dog walk of a single breed.
The pet food manufacturer has organized a great walk for Shih Tzus on May 7, 4p.m. at Bonifacio High Street Activity Center in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
The local effort needs 784 Shih Tzus, age six months and above, to join and break the record of Yorkimania in Mexico which had 783 Yorkshire Terriers walking at the same time.
Registration and participation are free of charge, but Shih Tzu owners are required to have their dogs certified and checked as fit to participate in the walk by a licensed veterinarian.
Participants must pre-register at www.royalcanin.ph/shih-tzu-walk and submit the requirements needed on the day of the event.
Aside from meeting the age requirement, every Shih Tzu must have updated vaccination (anti rabies, 5 in 1) and updated deworming records at least two weeks before the event.
Participants are expected to present pedigree papers from Philippine Canine Club or Asian Kennel Club Union of the Philippines. In the event that the Shih Tzu is unregistered, the owner can submit an official Breed Certification form to be stamped by a licensed veterinarian with an existing veterinary clinic, a breeder, or a show judge to validate that the dog is purebred.
The form can be downloaded from here.
Registration is until 5p.m. of April 22, 2016. All participants must be pre-registered as there will be no registration on the day of the event. Participants must sign a waiver form before they can join the walk.
Also, participating Shih Tzus must not be dressed or come in costumes. Royal Canin values and respects the true nature of dogs and cats and rejects all forms of anthropomorphism (humanizing the animal) which includes but not limited to hair dyes, shoes, and inappropriate grooming.
Shih Tzus are chosen for this event because it's the breed with the highest number of registration with PCCI and ACKUPI, said Blessie Zarzuela, marketing manager of Royal Canin Philippines. As of 2014, there were nearly 25,000 Shih Tzus registered in the country, she said.
“This is a first for us. Knowing the number of Shih Tzus registered in the country, we see the potential in beating the old Guinness World Record for the largest dog walk of a single breed. It also happens that our dog food for Shih Tzus is also our No. 1 product here,” Zarzuela told MetroPets.
Registered participants will receive official event T-shirt, certificate of participation, discount coupon, Royal Canin Rehydration Support, Shih Tzu dog food samples and gifts from other sponsors.
Royal Canin will assign one steward for every 50 dogs to guarantee that all registered participants fully cooperate and finish the walk so as not to disqualify the total attempt.
To make the event more memorable, Royal Canin and its partner sponsors have lined up a full afternoon of activities for dogs and their humans during and after the walk. The activities, except the official walk, are open to other types of dogs.
There will be games and contests with special awards, a grooming demonstration, redemption booths for give-aways from Royal Canin and exhibitors, Shih Tzu training and pet photobooths, among others.
To ensure everyone's safety during the event, Royal Canin will also have on standby an ambulatory vet clinic, ambulance (for humans) and veterinarians.
